This course offers a dynamic exploration of painting and art making. Continue your practice with weekly dedicated studio time and expand your skills. This course is your space to experiment, grow, and paint.

Students may choose a medium focus such as oil, acrylic, water-soluble oils, colored pencils, mixed media, or any combination of these and others, as limited by cost. For those interested, we can also take an introductory venture into the world of hand-made, earth-based pigments.

Choose Your Focus Area – Supply Lists Below:

Please choose based on your focus. Only purchase what you can afford and intend to utilize long after the course ends. You can also speak with the instructor for help deciding what would be a worthwhile option specific to you and your desires.

Option 1: Acrylic or Oil Painting (Studio Focus)

Paints ($35):

  • Acrylic: Liquitex Basics (4 oz) – Cadmium Red Med, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Oxide, Ultramarine Blue, Mars Black, Titanium White
  • Oil: Winsor Newton (10-color set or individual tubes) – Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Cad Red, Alizarin Crimson, Indian Yellow, Cad Yellow Light, Ultramarine Blue, Prussian Blue, Sap Green, Viridian Green, Permalba White. Recommended that you also purchase linseed oil, poppy seed oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil.
  • Water-Soluble Oil: Also called Water-Mixable Oil, these paints deliver the experience of traditional oils—rich viscosity, long working time, and smooth handling—without the need for solvents (which makes it a more environmentally friendly option). Recommended that you also purchase linseed oil as a pairing.

Brushes ($13):

  • Artist Loft 10-pc Set (#10171153) or individual brushes (#0 Round, #4 Flat, #4 & #8 Filbert, 2" Flat)
  • Optional: Mop brush, Chip brush, or Taklon Filbert set

Surfaces ($23):

  • 8x10 Canvas Boards or 11x14 Canvas Packs
  • Multi-media, canvas, or watercolor paper

Other Materials ($17–$30):

  • Palette or mixing surface (glass or Masterson Palette)
  • Palette knives, paper towels, folder, optional gesso

Option 2: Mixed Media (Studio Focus)

Gather the materials you may want to include in your artwork such as, fabrics, string/rope, natural materials, recyclables, etc.

 Option 3: Foraging Pigment & Natural Paint-Making

Painting Supplies ($20–$35):

  • Basic acrylic or oil paints (optional)
  • Canvas or paper surfaces (canvas board, watercolor, or canvas paper)
  • Brushes (same as above)
  • Rags, palette knife, palette

Pigment-Making Materials ($23):

  • Earth pigments (for purchase online if not being foraged locally. Recommended brand: Natural Earth Paint)
  • Face mask (dust protection)
  • Jars with lids (12–24 oz)
  • Mortar & pestle (non-wood)
  • Sketchbook for notes & swatches
  • Harvesting tote or basket, waterproof shoes/layers
  • Optional: sieve, extra paper for studies, and your own gathered rocks/earth
